NEWS RELEASE: Green Burial

Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service & Crematory Receives Three-Leaf Rating from the Green Burial Council

Hosting Free Green Burial Seminar in Recognition of Earth Day

Bozeman, MONT. (April 10, 2012) Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service & Crematory today announced that it has been certified as a green burial provider by the Green Burial Council, offering end-of-life services that are ecologically conscious to minimize long-term environmental impacts. Dokken-Nelson received this certification with a Three Leaf rating, the highest rating available, making Dokken-Nelson the only Three Leaf provider in Montana.

Dokken-Nelson will host a free seminar titled Understanding Green Burial—in recognition of Earth Day—on Thursday, April 19, from 5:30-6:30pm, and again on Friday, April 20, from 12-1pm, at 113 South Willson Avenue in Bozeman.

Some questions that will be addressed at the seminar include:

  • What is green burial?
  • How can a burial be considered “green?”
  • What options are available for green burial services?
  • What kind of casket is used for green burial?
  • Does the Gallatin Valley have a green burial cemetery?
  • Is green burial more costly than regular burial?

Green burial providers adopt burial and operational practices that are non-toxic and energy conserving, including burial with non-toxic, biodegradable burial containers and burial without the use of formaldehyde-based embalming chemicals.

“Dokken-Nelson has always offered green burial,” says Chris Remely, owner and funeral director at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service & Crematory. “But we have deepened our commitment to green burial by adhering to the requirements outlined by the Green Burial Council, giving Dokken-Nelson a Three Leaf rating—their highest rating available.”

The Green Burial Council is an independent, nonprofit organization working to encourage environmentally sustainable death care and the use of burial as a new means of protecting natural areas (
