Dr. Paul Hummison Visscher, MD died in the presence of his children in the early hours of Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at the age of 94.

Paul was born 24 December 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, with periodic sojourns to marine biology stations with his father, a marine biologist. He graduated high school from Western Reserve Academy and college at Western Reserve University, where he also attended medical school.  He married Sietwende (Wendy) Hermberg in 1946, and fathered Tim, Heidi, Kirk, and Judy in 4 different cities during his service as a doctor in the US Navy, including serving with the Marine Corps in Korea. In 1954 the family moved to Bozeman, MT.  Paul practiced general medicine first with the college health service, and then in private practice. He was an active ski and summer mountaineer, and an enthusiastic amateur rancher and beekeeper.  In 1965-1967, He undertook further training in Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, then returned to practice in Bozeman.  He was divorced in 1969 and married Sara Lee Neumann Van Horn, with whom he had another son, Ernst, and whose daughter, Amy, he adopted. They traveled extensively, and Paul served as a civilian doctor for the US Army in Germany and Georgia between 1993 and 2002.

Paul is survived by the above children; by stepchildren, Connie Currie and Kirby Van Horn; 14 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

We celebrate Paul Visscher’s legacy in our own love of mountains, skiing, and the wilderness; singing, dancing, and boating; birds, dogs, and gardens; beekeeping and medicine; and family.
