Rubie Cox

January 31, 1925 ~ June 20, 2017

Service: June 26, 2017 11:00 AM
   Location: Townsend United Methodist Church

Rubie Cox passed peacefully on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 -- 92 years after her birth in Lehigh County, PA, to parents, Nevin and Florence Swavely.  After graduating from Penn State University, she moved to Montana in 1946 showing her adventurous spirit by taking a job as Dietician at Fort Harrison VA Hospital in Helena, MT. She later admitted to some second thoughts as she changed from train to bus at Logan, MT, in March. The bare brown hills and lack of civilization were not appealing and she “might have turned right around and gone home if I’d had money for the return trip.” She figured that the Capital City would surely be more civilized and it was. She soon met and married Jim Cox in January of 1947.  There were multiple moves in the first few years of marriage (Helena, Missoula, White Sulphur Springs, Richey, Crow Creek) before they settled at the ranch near Winston, MT, which was their home for the rest of their lives.

She fully participated in the ranching endeavor, learning quickly and working hard. Her summers were filled with gardening, cooking for the crew, as well as driving the buckrake to put up the hay.  In calving season, she checked cows, helped with births, and fed the bottle calves. She was practical, frugal, and a very good neighbor. All were welcome at her table. She gave freely of her time and talents to 4-H Club Leadership, Cattlewomen, Intermountain Children’s Home, Broadwater Historical Museum, and Townsend United Methodist Church.

Rubie outlived her parents; brother, Arthur Swavely; husband, Jim Cox; and infant daughter, Cynthia. She is survived by her sister, Iva (Carl) Gingrich of Allentown, PA; son, Cliff (Missy) Cox of Winston; and daughter, Chris (Jim) Robison-Cox of Bozeman; and unofficial daughter, Mitzi Grover of Helena. Five grandchildren brought joy to her life: Courtney (Aaron) Kellum of Helena, Alicia (Jeff) Schafer of Phoenix, AZ, Nate (Sarah) Cox of Helena, Noah (Jean) Robison-Cox of Hoboken, NJ, and Emily (Sven) Torstveit of Vancouver, WA. She also loved her three great-grands: Elayna Kellum, Lydia Robison-Cox, and Robbie Torstveit. Rubie was deeply committed to her family and instilled in them and in others the values of faith, gratitude, perseverance, and generosity.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 26th at the Townsend United Methodist Church. Her ashes will be placed in the Winston Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in Rubie’s name to the Intermountain Children’s Home, 500 South Lamborn St., Helena, MT 59601, Townsend United Methodist Church, 200 N. Cedar St., Townsend, MT 59644, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

"Thank you seems too inadequate to express the true feelings in my heart for the way you handled the military service.  I know he would have approved of your efficient and caring manner and so do I.  Thanks again, too, for your kindness.  I shall always recommend your services to all I come in contact with."
