Helen Pauline (Husom) Fey, 90, of Bozeman, Montana, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2017 in Woodinville, Washington surrounded by her loving family. Helen (“Pauline” in younger years) was born March 14, 1927 in Oberon, North Dakota to Norwegian immigrant Peter Paulson Husom and Norwegian descendant Helena Lavina Mathilda (Burtness) Husom. She was proud of her Norwegian ancestry and friends and family often attributed her reserved, strong-willed (stubborn-in-a-good-way) character to her Norwegian heritage. It was this tenacity that carried Helen through her years-long battle with cancer.

After high school, Helen spent several years as a traveling relief manager for Western Union. Covering  the Dakotas through Nebraska and Iowa, she logged many miles in her ’58 Ford Fairlane 500 and accumulated many friends along the way. In 1961, while in Mitchell, South Dakota, Helen met and married Clarence George Fey (the adjacent Coast-to-Coast store owner who would shovel her sidewalk).  Together, they would later own and operate a motel in Mobridge, South Dakota and it was there they were blessed with twins, Michael and Sandra, in April 1962.

In 1964, the family moved to truly the “Last Best Place” and built their home of 50+ years south of Bozeman. Helen loved Montana. Helen loved dogs. With their 1965 Trailblazer in tow, and always a dog in the front seat, the family spent summers exploring and camping along Montana’s backroads - from   the Bitterroot to the Missouri - Lake Mary Ronan, Glacier Park, Gallatin and Hyalite Canyons were among her favorites. Helen and Clarence were always game for a road trip, and in later years their motor home made many trips to the West Coast to visit Mike and Sandy and their nine grandchildren. Helen was a loving and dedicated wife, sister, mother, and grandmother. She lived for family endeavors, holidays, and times when all were together.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carrie Oline; and husband of 53 years, Clarence.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Nanette) Fey of Portland, OR and Sandra (Monte) Sutton of Woodinville, WA; and grandchildren, Peter (Rosalyn) Fey, Timothy (Olivia) Fey, Matthew (Hanna) Fey, Madeleine Fey, Mikey Fey, Stephen Fey, John Fey, Paul Sutton, and Amanda Sutton.  

Helen found beauty and inspiration in all trees. Memorials to plant a tree in her memory may be made to The Arbor Day Foundation (www.arborday.org).
