Melanie Sullivan

October 6, 1932 ~ October 06, 2017

Service: October 18, 2017 1:00 PM
   Location: Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service

Melanie R. (DeHooghe) Sullivan, 85, of Belgrade passed away due to heart complications on Friday, October 6, 2017. She was surrounded by family and loved ones as she went to meet her Heavenly Father.

Mel was born October 6, 1932, in Gladstone, Michigan, to Ernest and Cecilia (DeVet) DeHooghe.  She attended All Saints Catholic School and Gladstone High School before going to Saint Anthony’s Hospital where she studied to become a nurse. She later returned to school to get her LPN degree.

She married David Sullivan on October 28, 1951, and they had two children, William “Bill” and Elizabeth “Liz”.

Mel worked as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital Pediatrics Department in Belvidere, Illinois, before moving to Montana.  She spent time in Missoula and Lolo before moving back to Bozeman and began working at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, where she would later retire from.

She was a natural caregiver who continued to volunteer at the hospital when she could no longer work.  She loved helping children and the elderly, and very much enjoyed taking in rescue animals in need of a good home.

Mel thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors especially gardening, traveling, and camping.  She was an extremely talented concert pianist who lit up a room when she played.  She also enjoyed sewing and embroidery, crafts, baking, and reading.  Spending time with her family, particularly her grandkids and great-grandkids, was special, especially at Christmas. She had an enigmatic energy and made friends wherever she went, whether it was at her doctors’ offices or walking her dogs in the field by her house.

In her words, she had "achieved many of her life goals".

Mel was preceded in death by her husband, David; parents, Ernest and Cecilia DeHooghe; step-mother, Bernice DeHooghe; and siblings, Peter DeHooghe, Jeanne Galeckie, and Dianne DeHooghe.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth (Dennis) Coffman; son, William Sullivan; four grandchildren, Ryan (Jessica) Coffman, Nick Coffman, Lindsay Sullivan, and Leann (Sam) McGuire; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Kathy Viau and Sharon (Pudge) Foster. And Daisy, too.

Mom and Grandma of many, is loved immensely and will be missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 18 at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service. All are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers and/or memorial donations, the family asks that donations be made to the Heart of The Valley Animal Shelter, PO Box 11390, Bozeman, MT  59719.

"Chris, how do I ever find the words to properly or adequately thank you for your support and kindness during a very trying time.  You are a very special young man and have a wonderful way of making a very difficult time much more easy.  It was very comforting to deal with you.  You are a natural at your position.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
