Joan Knodel

February 15, 1943 ~ December 25, 2017

Joan L. (O’Halloran) Knodel passed away peacefully at her home in Bozeman, MT on December 25, 2017.

Joan was born on February 15, 1943 to Alfred “Bud” and Loyce (Masters) O’Halloran in Spokane, WA.  When she was seven years old, the family made the permanent move to a ranch in Clyde Park, MT.  Some of Joan’s fondest memories during her childhood were traveling all over the US during the months when farming and ranching were slow.

Joan graduated from Clyde Park High School in 1961 and Western Montana College in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. On August 26, 1967, she married Harold “Harry” Knodel. Two years later, she put her lesson planning on hold to stay home with her children. She returned to teaching in 1978. Her teaching experiences throughout her career included a year in an urban school in Tacoma, WA, a rural one-room schoolhouse out of Toston, MT, and a variety of elementary classrooms throughout Montana. Even though she was passionate about teaching and finding creative ways for students to learn, Joan selflessly retired her teaching career in 1996 to move back to the family ranch to help care for her nephews who had recently lost their mother. She remained on the ranch until 2014 when she moved to Bozeman so her daughters could help care for her easier.

Joan is survived by her children, Kevin Knodel of Bloomington, IN, Holly Knodel of Livingston, MT, and Shannon Knodel of Bozeman, MT; granddaughters, Stevie Knodel of Bloomington, IN, and Danielle “Nellie” Knodel of Fife, WA; brother, Mike O’Halloran of Wilsall, MT; and numerous extended family members. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold Knodel, and sister, Kay Miller.

No memorial service is set at this time, but the family and close friends will gather in the summer to celebrate her life. Those who so desire can make donations in Joan’s memory to Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, the Livingston Program (5237 US Highway 89 S, Ste 1, Livingston, MT 59047) and Bozeman Health Foundation with “Hospice” in the memo line (931 Highland Blvd, Ste 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715).

"Chris, how do I ever find the words to properly or adequately thank you for your support and kindness during a very trying time.  You are a very special young man and have a wonderful way of making a very difficult time much more easy.  It was very comforting to deal with you.  You are a natural at your position.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
