Mary Lucile Simmons of Bozeman, MT went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2019, with her daughters by her side.

Mary was born on January 25, 1926, in Bozeman to Arthur C. Reed and Elsie Phipps Reed.  She attended Nelson School for 3 years, Belgrade School from 4th grade through junior year, then finished high school at Gallatin High School in 1943.  She went on to MSU and Bozeman Deaconess School of Nursing and finished her degree at Spokane Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. 

Mary spent most of her career life in nursing at various facilities which included: Spokane Deaconess Hospital; Bozeman Deaconess Hospital; Oconto Falls Memorial Hospital in WI; St. Mary’s Hospital in Racine, WI; Billings Deaconess Hospital; Livingston Memorial Hospital; St. Pat’s Hospital in Missoula; St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena; Powell County Hospital in Deer Lodge; Galen State Hospital; and Warm Springs Hospital.  She retired from hospital nursing and took care of her father for 6 to7 years, then her husband, Pete for 2 years.

Mary married Theodore Rudolph Welch in 1947 and had 6 girls by that marriage which was dissolved in 1962.  She married Everett (Pete) Simmons in 1976 and lived happily for 29½ years when he passed away in 2005.

Mary was active in Bible Study, BWAGS quilting group, an active member of Grace Bible Church, and was a member of Deaconess Alumni of Spokane.  She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and friends.  She kept busy with quilting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, time with family, and she loved to travel.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur & Elsie Reed; brothers, Frank & Leonard Reed; her husband, Pete; and daughters, Judy Kemp and Debbie Jenkins.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Straugh of Deer Lodge, Kathy Tomaskie of Montana City, Lucy Melugin (Jeff) of Billings, and Jackie Welch-Doubek of Henderson, NV; grandchildren, Lanae (Keith) Vetsch of East Helena, Melvin Matson of Clancy, Tina Taylor of Deer Lodge, Kyle (Joy) Melugin of Billings, Shannon Jenkins-Bever (Jesse), Tyler (Katie) Melugin of Thornton, CO, Melissa Jenkins-Hawks (Charles) of Glendale, AZ, Kayla Melugin-Weigler (Ryan) of Billings, and honorary granddaughter Caitlin Gollehon-Hicock of Wenatchee, WA; and great-grandchildren, Theo Melugin, Leanna Bever and Natalie Bever.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 14, from 5 to 7 P.M. at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service, 113 S. Wilson Ave.  The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 15, at 11 a.m. at Grace Bible Church, 3625 S. 19th Ave.  Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens directly after the funeral service with the reception following.

Memorials can be made to her beloved church – Grace Bible Church.
