Social Security & Veterans Benefits

How Do I Go About Filing For and Notifying Social Security and the Veterans Administration?

Dokken-Nelson files the appropriate paperwork for the Death Certificate, official notification to the Social Security Administration, notification to the Gallatin County and Federal Veterans Administrations, and for life insurance benefits.

Social Security

Dokken-Nelson will file the notification to the Social Security Administration.  However, families will need to meet with them to determine benefits.

For each honorably discharged veteran, all Montana counties provide:

  1. Death benefits of up to $500
  2. Military honors
  3. An American flag
  4. A headstone if buried in a cemetery
  5. A free plot for decedent and spouse if buried in a state or national* veterans cemetery

*NOTE:  The closest state cemetery is Fort Harrison in Helena, MT.  The closest national cemetery is located in Laurel, MT.

Your loved one may also be eligible for Federal VA benefits.

"I just wanted to thank you for all your help with my dad's funeral.  Planning a funeral can be very stressful, but you took such care that we were never confused or stressed about anything.  It was so easy to call and talk with you and ask questions.  You presented all the options to us clearly to let us decide about things, and then you made them happen at the service so we didn't have to do anything.  You are so very good at your job."
