Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service

Gary Long

January 16, 1943 ~ May 06, 2018

Gary Alan Long was born in Bellingham, Washington, on January 16, 1943, to Gene and Rita Long.  He joined the Navy with his parents' approval at age 17.  His desire was to be an "UDT" diver, so he trained for scuba and hard hat diving.  After leaving the Navy, he moved to the Seattle area and worked for General Construction, eventually going into business with Garrison 8 Divers Corporation.

Gary traveled extensively laying pipelines in places like Hoover Dam, New York, Iowa, Alaska, the Bahamas and Mexico. At the same time, he bought his own septic tank truck and started Gary's Septic Service staying in business for over 30 years.

While working in New York, he decided to get his private pilot's license and shortly after bought his first airplane.  Gary was also an experienced sky diver with 1,880 jumps to his name.  He jumped for accuracy, competition, and for charity making as many as 100 jumps in a single day.

Gary loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter of deer, elk, and moose. He also enjoyed fishing.

Gary and his wife, Denise, moved to Manhattan, Montana, permanently in 2016 after spending every summer there for five years. They had just finished building their forever home in October.

Gary is survived by his wife, Denise; sons, Troy and Jamie Long of Seattle; daughter, Katie Erickson of Sumner; four granddaughters and one grandson; his brother, Dale; and sister-in-law, Diane Long of Bellingham; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be at a later date.
