Joyce Shepard

July 29, 1927 ~ October 03, 2018

Joyce G. Shepard passed away October 3, 2018, at Parkhaven Retirement in Manhattan, Montana, following a brief illness. Joyce was born in 1927 in Aberdeen, Ohio, to Frieda Brittingham and Bernard (Ben) Grierson. She attended college at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, obtaining a degree in Theater. Her love for drama followed her throughout her life. Joyce married Charles Yale Shepard in 1950, and spent the next 30 years golfing, knitting, and raising her two boys in Dayton, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974.

In 1980, Joyce followed her sons to Bozeman, Montana, where she found the lifestyle she was seeking. She worked as housemother at the Pi Beta Phi house on campus, and pursued classes in writing and fiber arts. She moved from the sorority house to a condo she set up as a fiber arts studio with looms, spinning wheels, and yarn, which were the focus of her activities for her remaining years. She was active in Spinners and Weavers groups in Bozeman. She was a volunteer at the Museum of the Rockies as an antique fabric preservationist under Margaret Wood and as a spinner at the Tinsley House, and at the Bozeman Symphony. Joyce brought her love of acting to various stages in Bozeman from 1980 to 2005. During the past few years she was a dedicated founding member of the GeriActors group based at the Bozeman Senior Center. She loved bringing joy to retirement and nursing homes in Gallatin, Park, and Sweetgrass counties.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Brad (Mary Lennon) and John (Cheryl); as well as her beloved grandchildren, Ben, Aaron (Erika), Sarah and Madison Shepard. In accordance with Joyce’s wishes, the family plans a private service. Memorials in Joyce’s name can be made to the Bozeman Senior Center, 807 N. Tracy Ave., Bozeman, MT 59715 or to Bozeman Health Foundation, (memo line: Hospice), 931 Highland Blvd., Ste 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715.

"It is difficult to express my appreciation for the exceptionally kind and thoughtful attention we received.  It is no exaggeration to say that I (we) could not have done this without your guidance and direction."
